A hotel dedicated to wine

There will be few hotels in the country that pay so much attention to wine. It is called Monverde and belongs to Quinta da Lixa, in the Green wine region.

In 1986, Óscar and Alberto Meirelles, along with cousin Manuel, founded a small company that initially sold the wine in bulk. Before long, realizing the quality of the wine they produced, began to be bottled with its own brand, achieving a good recognition in the market, both nationally and internationally. With the increase in exports, they also began to need a space to receive and host international partners and customers who visited them. They put their hands on the construction site and, a few kilometres from the cellar, on a 30-hectare estate they had in Telões, between Felgueiras and Amarante - Quinta de Sanguinhedo - decided to recover one of the houses that had in ruins there to serve as accommodation.  The initial idea eventually gained new contours when the architect Fernando Coelho began to get excited about the project and, together with the partners of Lixa, decided not only to rebuild a house but to recover several and make there a wine hotel that was a reference in the region.

During 2014 and part of 2015, the works were requalified of the existing buildings on the property and the remaining support infrastructure necessary for the operation of the hotel was also created, with the tourist activity starting may 2015. Thought of an ecological aspect, 80% of the stone already existing in the old buildings was reused. The treatment of wood and the paints used are of reduced environmental impact, the use of solar panels is a constant, and the waters are reused for watering vineyards and gardens. The decoration was in charge of Paulo Lobo, who kept green and brown as dominant tones, and also different types of wood.  In the central building, a sculpture - 'Rain of Leaves' - pays homage to the vineyard and the people who work it. There are 366 vine leaves carved in wood, one for each day of the year (one of them golden representing the 366th day of the leap years). The sculpture dominates the entire common area of bar, living room and restaurant.

The hotel has more than 30 accommodations, a restaurant and SPA, spread over three refurbished houses installed in the middle of the vineyards. A little more than four years after its opening, it has already won several awards and is today considered one of the best hotels in the country, namely in the wine area, where it is the most complete in terms of services. Were it not for its genesis, the passion for wine and everything related to it. In addition to massages and vinotherapy treatments (body and face), guests also have several activities related to wine, such as participating in the harvest when it is their season, creating their own wine using lots of different grape varieties or attending a wine course. , commented tasting or cooking workshops where you learn the best pairings with Quinta da Lixa wines. Other activities to explore are horse and bicycle tours, hiking, among others.
