Maria João de Almeida is graduated in Communication since 1995, having specialized in the wine area. She worked as a journalist at TVI TV Channel and joined Expresso newspaper for more than one decade. She often collaborates with several publications and she is a jury member of several national and international wine and gastronomy competitions.

She is the author of many books, including Wine Memories (classified as a work of Cultural Interest by the Ministry of Culture), Guide of Wine Tourism in Portugal (awarded as the Best in the World at the Gourmand Awards), Wine at the Tip of the Tongue and Wine and Wine at the Table (winner of the 1st Portugal CookBook Fair 'Wine Book' award, promoted by APEL - Portuguese Association of Publishers and Booksellers, and BrandScape). In 2016, she received the special award 'Wine Critic' by Wine Passion Magazine.

She was decorated by the Sovereign Order of the Knights of Santo Urbano and São Vicente and is a member of the prestigious Port Wine Brotherhood. She taught in the postgraduate course of Marketing of Enoturism, at Lusófona University, of which she was also founder. She is Certified Port Educator, formed by IVDP - Porto and Douro Wine Institute. In 2009, it launched its website, and VinhoTV, the first television channel dedicated to wine on the web.

She is also the author of documentaries for television, wine course trainer, lecture speaker, coordinates wine tourism trips in partnership with Madeira Connection, and TAP consultant in the choice of wines on board. More recently, since July 2018, LIDL consultant in the wine area.

She is one of the founders and President of the Portuguese Wine Tourism Association (2020); and Delegate of Portugal at OMET - World Wine Tourism Organization.
