Herdade do Sobroso recently presented its latest news, top of the range that will complement its wine offering in this segment.
Getting to Sobroso is like reaching a small natural paradise where, in addition to the vineyards, the landscape is complemented with hectares and more hectares of forest where there are, among many other wildlife, wild boars, deer, deer, mouflons, partarees, doves and hares; that are emerging here and there, curious or frightened, through the trees and shrubs. Those lucky enough to overnight in this property's charming country hotel can also swim in the pool, fish, cycle, go horse riding, go kayaking, water skiing or take a balloon ride in case the weather is on the lookand the ground. To the paradise described, if we join the wine tasting, the stay is perfect. It speaks who had the privilege of having followed the project from the beginning and returns once again, now to watch the launch of wines that reveal the maturity of the project.
These lands were acquired in 2001 by António Ginestal Machado, architect by profession, who invested there in a small production of wine – now with 62 hectares, inserted in the 1600 property – and in a rural tourism unit translated into a small charming hotel situated in the middle of a vineyard. António Machado and his daughter, Sofia manage the property, and the latter is also responsible for marketing the wines prepared by her husband, the winemaker Filipe Teixeira Pinto. The mother, Isabel Ginestal Machado, is responsible for the decoration and maintenance of the hotel. A family project lived a hundred percent, where everyone works in the common effort to offer a unique experience to those who visit the homeowner.
This time the return to Sobroso is due to the launch of the top-of-the-range élevage white and red wines; and the colheiras of Arché white and red, the latter is already in the third harvest and white is also a novelty. Despite having different profiles, they all have in common the fact that they are top of the range, fresh and structured, produced with the best grapes of selected plots, harvested by hand, of limited editions, and released only in the best years.
The Arché brand in the red version already existed previously, being this new harvest the 2019 (already in its third edition). Prepared with Alicante Bouschet, Touriga Nacional, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, after gentle crushing and pre-fermentative macerated, fermented in temperature controlled lagares. The stage lasted 12 months in new French oak barrels, and another 12 months in bottle. A red with elegant fruity and mineral notes, spice and some floral, with well integrated wood. On the palate a remarkable wine without regret, a red of great level. (3528 bottles). The white, from the same harvest as red (2019) is the first time to be released. Prepared with arinto and antão vaz varieties, fermented in new French oak barrels with controlled temperature. He also did a later internship with battonage for 12 months, followed by 9 months of bottle internship. A mineral white, floral, with some spice. On the palate it is full-bodied, fresh and unctuous, ending persistently. (1350 bottles).
But the great novelties, Élevage white and red - both from the 2019 harvest and limited edition to 800 bottles each - are the maximum expression of the uniqueness of the vineyard planted on the banks of the Guadiana River and also of a winemaking carried out between the lagar and clay ampovens, purposely brought from Italy for the production of these wines. Like the Arché brand, they are produced only in the best years. The Red Élevage fermented in the lagar with controlled temperature, then passed to the amphes where it remained for a year. Bottled without filtration, it was still bottled for 8 months. A minimalist winemaking that gave rise to a wine of fruity and pure aroma, with excellent structure, elegant tannins, beautiful and well polished, with an impressive finish. White followed the same winemaking philosophy and reveals a striking structure, with a perfect balance between fruit and acidity, a wine that also impresses by revealing its enormous purity and aging potential.
The wines presented will be released before Christmas and can be found in wine cellars and restaurants of reference.
